Become a Mentor

Do you remember how important your first mentor was? The big impact they made in your life?

It might have been recruitment to a college, learning about your favorite topic, or just a little support when it was needed.

Have you ever wanted to help Indigenous students the same way you were helped but didn't know how?

Become an AIRO Mentor to share your experiences, utilize your resources, and build lasting relationships that will make a difference.

Mission of our Mentors

Many of us have had a mentor throughout our life that helped shape the person we are today. Whether that was a coach, teacher, boss, or friend who have played an important role in guiding us to a path worth walking. A mentor can offer many positives such as confidence building, support, gain new perspectives, and more. Here are a few of the shared qualities we like to see in our mentors:

  • Being flexible

  • Want to be involved

  • Respect for one another

  • Ability to listen well

  • Communicate at a high level

  • Have empathy

The Gifts of Mentoring

Not only is mentoring a student beneficial for the mentee - it is beneficial for the mentor as well. Studies have shown that mentors gain just as much knowledge and growth as the mentee. Becoming a mentor is one of the best ways to give back and receive benefits along the way such as:

  • Supporting growth

  • Achieve personal growth and learn more about themselves

  • Improve their self-esteem and feel they are making a difference

  • Gain a better understanding of other cultures and develop a greater appreciation for diversity

  • Feel more productive and have a better attitude at work

  • Have fun

Above all, a good mentor is willing to take the time to get to know their mentee, to learn new things that are important to the young person, and even to be changed by their relationship.
